How to Take Charge of Your Waning Friendships

Does your life get so busy that you cannot make time to keep up with all of your to-dos let alone your relationships? Me too! I am working full time, running an online business, finishing my doctorate, working out with a trainer, teaching piano, taking care of our many pets and maintaining a healthy relationship with my boyfriend Jordan. Needless to say life can get a little hectic and spending time with each of my friends can be difficult.

Some of you may be lucky and have a group of friends that are all friends with each other making it natural to see everyone at once, but that is not me. I grew up painfully shy. I made friends sparingly and therefore I have lots of individual friends who may not even know my other friends. A couple years ago I got tired of feeling like a bad friend who could never make time to see everyone and decided to take things into my own hands. I started a monthly game night where I could invite everyone over at once and put the responsibility on my friends to come or not. It was a huge relief and allowed me to balance my life with  more ease.

Our monthly game night also allows us to have so much fun from the comfort of our home. Jordan and I both love to host and cook so game night allows us to get creative. Sometimes we do a big themed night and other times just snacks and comfy clothes. In our book there is no wrong way to have fun with your friends.

The point of this post is not that you need to have a monthly game night to maintain your friendships and balance your life, but that you do need to take your life into your own hands and it doesn’t have to be hard! It is easy for us to make a Facebook event to invite our friends over, plan a few snacks and cocktails, and pull some games from the basement once a month. It is definitely easier then planning individual dates with all of my friends. If games aren’t your thing, what about dinners out? Movies? Volleyball? Hiking? The list is truly endless, but what I want you to do is to pick something and schedule it.

Tell me in the comments below what you pick and the date you schedule it. Keep yourself accountable!

  1. What a great idea, Danielle! Like you, I have lots of friends who don’t know each other (and because I moved so much as a kid, I also have lots of friends all over) and it can be hard to keep up with everyone by trying to stay in touch one at a time. I wonder how many friends I could round up for a night out… 😉

  2. I love, love, love this idea. What a great way to stay in touch with everyone, and maximize your time! Your game nights sound fun and if I was your IRL friend, I would totally want to some.
